During this project, you will use Photoshop and CorelDRAW (or Illustrator) to produce an original fantasy card (such as a hockey or baseball trading card). The project will require sophisticated image editing and graphic design to complete a convincing, attractive card.

WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO DO:

1. You will begin by producing a series of thumbnail sketches of 3 possible card designs (front and back of card). These thumbnails are essentially visual brainstorming for your card. They can be drawn quickly, but should indicate major design elements (border, type, etc.) and should be neat and original.  Use the sheets provided in class for your thumbnail/rough designs.
2. Spot colour should be added and text/content should be more clearly indicated (what you plan to type on the final card). Again, make sure you sketch both front and back.
3. Once you have completed the 3 rough sketches, you will produce a comprehensive drawing of your final design. This comprehensive must be drawn to accurate scale and must include: replicated fonts, full colour, all small text indicated, use of a ruler for lines and layout, logo design. At this point you should select a suitable body photo that you will use for your composite image in Photoshop. Make sure that the photo layout fits the card design (ex. vertical photo for vertical/portrait layout card).
4. Find a suitable body photo online (or scanned image) that you will use for your Photoshop composite image.  Using one of our class digital cameras, take a face photo that closely matches the required position in your body photo.  You will use Photoshop to carefully combine the face and body and the photos to create a convincing, blended composite image.
5. Carefully reproduce your comprehensive design (from step 3) using CorelDRAW or Adobe Illustrator. Pay close attention to design details, layout, proportion, spacing and colour.  You should not use Photoshop for this portion of the project as it produces raster graphics that aren't as crisp and the vector graphics created with the other drawing programs.
6. Import Photoshop composite images into your CorelDRAW or Illustrator document and complete the card design.
7. Export the final card as a good quality Jpeg image that can be used for your portfolio site. 
8. Hand in the following (to hand-in folder) at the end of the unit:

• original source images
• your Photoshop file (with all layers)
• CorelDRAW or Illustrator file
• final exported Jpeg image
• ALL rough design worksheets (give to instructor at end of project)

HOW YOU'LL BE MARKED:

PREP WORK (20 Marks)

Rough Thumbnails (Idea Development) (10 Marks)

• 3 different ideas explored - sketches of front and back of card, useful detail indicated, good variety of ideas, drawn to correct scale, spot colour and fonts indicated, design development evident

Final Comprehensive (10 Marks) 

• very carefully drawn, use of ruler, small type indicated, fonts drawn to resemble computer typefaces, full colour, to exact scale, image sketched in reasonable detail

FINAL PRODUCT (80 Marks)

Photo Composition - Photoshop (30 Marks)

• Suitable images are properly combined and blended using Photoshop tools (proper resolution for printing); care in matching face and body (direction, size, skin tone, lighting, angle); edges accurately blended

Card Graphics - CorelDRAW or Illustrator (30 Marks)  

• Accurate reproduction of comprehensive designs; proper size; careful placement of text and graphic elements (use of alignment tools, etc.); design consistency; fonts resemble original design plan; effective use of colour, line and shape.

Creative Effort/Artistic Impression (10 Marks)

• Effectiveness of design; appropriate design elements are used with care; card is attractive and suits genre (such as hockey card).

Technical Skill (10 Marks)

• Project clearly demonstrates high level of technical skill with a variety of software applications; student utilizes available resources to learn software and problem-solve as required during the project.
