Summative Portfolio Project

Page history last edited by Mr. Stemmler 13 years, 2 months ago

Congratulations!  You've made it to the (almost) end of the grade 11 comm tech course and you only have one more major project to tackle - the summative portfolio.  During this project, you will complete the portfolio website you designed near the start of the course.  This site will showcase all the major practical project work that you have worked on throughout the semester.  See the detailed description below for what your portfolio site will contain.  You will have approximately 5-7 classes to complete this activity.

FINAL SUBMISSION DATE - Tuesday, January 25th (hand in on DVD)

Exemplars:

  • To help you better understand what you are expected to do for your final summative portfolio, please review the following exemplars (all Level 3 or 4 sites that showcase student work - screenshots only).
  • Pay attention to graphics, page layout and contents.  Try to determine which pages would earn a level 3 or 4 based on marking structure listed at bottom of this page.
  • Content may vary slightly from what you are asked to complete, but page layout and design are very similar.
  • Mr. Todd will showcase some of these portfolio sites in class.

What You're Going to Do:

  • Using the original Fireworks page template you produced near the start of the course, you will design/complete page layouts for all major projects (see below).  Each page will contain the following material:
    • Original page graphics (based on template) - entire site should have consistent design
    • Well-formatted design (easy to use, free of spelling errors, appealing graphics/layout)
    • Links/navigation to other pages in site
    • Brief 1-2 paragraph explanation of the project (includes details regarding process, software used, successes and/or problems encountered, new skills learned)
    • Min. 2-3 screenshots of work "in progress" for each project - ideally, these are created during project work, but can be reproduced during summative unit.  Each screenshot will feature a short caption explaining what the shot depicts.  Click here for a simple tutorial on how to produce screen shots.
    • Links to final copies of project (video, audio, image files as required) - ALL CONTENT NEEDS TO BE "WEB FRIENDLY!"  This means you will need to produce Jpeg copies of graphics (such as Coreldraw files).
    • OPTIONAL - may also want to include scanned images of rough work (storyboards, rough sketches, etc.) - may enhance overall portfolio mark
  • Students will need to work carefully to ensure all files are managed correctly in appropriate folders.  See the sample directory structure below.  Your exact structure may vary slightly, but should resemble the sample.
  • You will need at least the following pages for your site (you can add more if you'd like):
    • Home Page (features course information, personal introduction, graphics)
    • Animation Project Page (includes AVI verson of final rendered project)
    • Desktop Publishing Page (includes link to PDF copy of InDesign file)
    • Photography Page (includes thumbnails to link to sample photographs as needed)
    • Fantasy Card Page (include thumbnail links to Jpeg copies of card design)
    • Audio Page (includes link to FLV or AVI version of final rendered bullet movie)
    • Video Page (includes link to FLV or AVI version of final rendered newscast)
    • Graphic Design (logos, etc. from start of course)

What You'll Hand In:

  • You will hand in your entire website (including ALL linked files) in a folder that has been burned to DVD.
  • BONUS - you may also create an appropriate CD/DVD cover for your summative if you wish.  This is NOT a requirement, but may be used to enhance your final project if you have time following production of the portfolio.

How You'll Be Marked:

  • The summative portfolio is worth 30% of your final course mark.  It will be marked as follows:
    • Site Layout, Navigation & Completeness (30 Marks):
      • consistent, unified design to pages/site; easy-to-navigate format; clear navigation tools that function correctly; all required pages included in site, with ease of navigation from all pages; no broken links; proper flow to site information & content (including written material and/or captions on pages); links to external media files (includes thumbnail graphics as required).
    • Appearance & Design - Use of Graphics/Images (20 Marks):
      • use of graphics and design elements to produce an attractive, appealing web page that adhere to web design conventions; original graphics produced using Fireworks and/or Photoshop; consistent designs; file types and sizes are web-appropriate (small files, proper resolutions); proper button and title graphic designs; attractive backgrounds and/or borders used.
    • File Management & Organization (30 Marks):
      • all required files/media submitted with project; material properly organized in folder/directory structure (as outlined above); files produced in correct formats for use on website; correct screenshots, etc. created and submitted with pages/files.
